Recently we have really been tinkering with our Groups, to make sure they are very optimized for search engines (and by search engines we mean Google). Getting organic traffic from the general web is a great opportunity to leverage and build your audience by using targeted content, keywords and landing strategies.
A recent group created for the Haiti Cause, was a great challenge as the internet is all a buzz over all things Haiti. As you can see from below we are in the top 1 of all search results for the keyword Haiti Positive Impact.
Careful planning and search consideration are key when you setup and are operating your group. Here are a few tips that you can use on your groups to increase traffic and build membership.
1. Group Name
Very important to name your group with something distinct (unique to find) or very relevant to your purpose. Your group name will appear in many places in the group, including your URLs.
2. Group Description
When you craft your group description, this text will show up in google search results, next to the link. It should contain relevant keywords.
3. Group Welcome Message
Making sure you group name is mentioned again is a good idea, as it will boast your relevance.
4. One-line Sentence on Group
This appears on several places in the group, Boomity directory, and badge.
5. Blog Posts (and also Media, Calendar Events, Discussions)
Your core content will most likely come from your Blog posts. The post titles, post content, and post tags will all be crawled by google.
6. Share and Promote Content
After creating your group and creating your blog posts, you should continually seed the web using our ShareThis button. This will allow you to share group page links (blog links, media links) to popular places like Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Delicious and so on. Doing this will definitely boast your search rankings. Sometimes it will take a day or two for Google to recognize you new prominence. Feel free to share your tips with the Boomity community.
